October is Community Support Month

There are over 25 different community support services, including personal care and home help, Meals on Wheels, Alzheimer and adult day programs, transportation to medical appointments, friendly visiting, caregiver support, hospice and palliative care services, and much more.

It's a successful model because clients prefer to live in their own homes and communities, and supporting them to do so reduces costs to other parts of the health care system. The not-for-profit agencies that provide these services receive partial government funding, and are also supported by community foundations, individual donations and over 3 million hours of volunteer service each year.

The MSC has been providing Home Support services in our community since 1978.  Our first services were home help and volunteer transportation.  We have grown since that time to provide additional programs in our community, such as  Meals On Wheels, Assisted Living in the Community, Foot Care and Housekeeping and Errand Service.

CSS month is an opportunity to celebrate seniors through our programs in keeping them healthy, happy and independent.  In 2016-2017 we provided the following care and services to seniors in our community

  • 18,324 Assisted Living hours/41 clients
  • 2,460 Foot Care sessions/491 clients
  • 8,072 Meals on Wheels delivered/168 clients
  • 2,905 Personal Support & Homemaking hours/151 clients
  • 2,960 Transportation drives/146 clients
  • 5,963 Volunteer hours/106 volunteers, 12 corporate teams
